A tyre can look right on the rim, have plenty of tread and hold air, yet still be the wrong tyre for the job. Truck tyre load ratings tell you how much weight each tyre is designed to carry at a specified inflation pressure. Get that decision wrong and the result can be excessive heat, rapid wear, casing damage, blowouts and an expensive truck sitting on the side of the road.

For owner-drivers, fleet managers, tipper operators and trailer owners, load rating is not a catalogue detail to gloss over. It is part of keeping the vehicle safe, compliant and productive on every run. The right tyre needs to suit the actual axle loads, the wheel position, the work being done and the pressures your vehicle can maintain.

What truck tyre load ratings actually mean

A truck tyre load rating is the maximum load a tyre can carry when it is inflated to the pressure specified by the tyre manufacturer. It is commonly shown as a load index, a number that corresponds to a load capacity in kilograms. On heavy vehicle tyres, you may also see the rating shown in a service description alongside the speed symbol.

For example, a tyre marked with a load index is not simply rated for the combined weight of the whole truck. Its capacity applies to that individual tyre under the stated conditions. The total carrying capacity of an axle depends on the number of tyres fitted, whether they are in single or dual configuration, the approved pressure, and the manufacturer’s published data.

That distinction matters. A drive axle running dual tyres may have a different per-tyre capacity from a steer axle running single tyres, even where the tyre size appears similar. Tyres used in dual fitment can also have a lower allowable load per tyre than the same tyre in single fitment, because the paired tyres retain more heat.

Why the right load rating keeps trucks on the road

Overloading a tyre creates heat. Heat is one of the fastest ways to shorten a truck tyre’s working life. When a tyre is asked to carry more than it was built for, its casing flexes excessively. Over time, that can lead to shoulder wear, separations, cracking and sudden failure.

Underinflation creates a similar problem. A tyre may have an adequate load rating on paper, but it cannot safely deliver that capacity if the pressure is below the required level. Lower pressure increases sidewall flex and heat build-up. On a long haul, a loaded tipper run or repeated stop-start work around a site, the damage can build before the driver notices anything unusual.

Choosing an unnecessarily high-capacity tyre is not always the answer either. It may cost more, add weight or be unsuitable for the rim, suspension, application or required ride characteristics. The practical answer is to fit a tyre with sufficient capacity and the right construction for the real work the vehicle performs, with a sensible margin for operating conditions.

Gross weight is not the whole story

A truck can be within its gross vehicle mass and still overload an individual axle or tyre. Load distribution changes with body design, trailer set-up, payload position, fuel levels and equipment carried. A crane, water tank, toolboxes or a load pushed too far forward can put more pressure on one axle than expected.

This is particularly relevant for tippers, earthmoving support vehicles, agricultural trucks and trailers operating on uneven ground. Side slopes, rough access tracks and repeated tight turns can shift loading across tyres. The tyre selection must account for the axle weights the vehicle sees in real service, not just the empty weight or best-case figures.

How to check truck tyre load ratings properly

Start with the tyre sidewall. Record the full tyre size, load index, ply rating or load range where shown, speed symbol and any single/dual marking. Do not select a replacement by size alone. Two tyres with the same nominal size can have different load capacities and intended applications.

Next, check the vehicle manufacturer’s tyre placard, handbook and axle specifications. These give the approved tyre sizes and inflation information for the vehicle. For modified trucks, specialised bodies and trailers, the required capacity may also depend on engineering documentation and current axle mass limits.

The most useful next step is weighing the vehicle by axle in realistic operating condition. Empty weight is helpful, but loaded axle weights are what reveal whether your steer, drive or trailer tyres are being worked beyond their limits. If the vehicle runs different payloads, assess the heaviest legitimate load and how it is distributed.

Then compare those figures with the tyre maker’s load and inflation tables. The tyre’s capacity must meet or exceed the load placed on it at the cold pressure you can safely run. Pressures should be checked when tyres are cold, before a run, not after they have heated up on the road.

If you are unsure, get a tyre professional involved before ordering replacements. A quick check is cheaper than fitting the wrong tyres, wearing them out early and having to deal with a roadside failure.

Load rating, tyre pressure and axle position work together

Load ratings do not work in isolation. Pressure is the support system that allows the tyre to carry its rated load. The required pressure differs between tyre sizes, construction types, axle positions and actual loads. A steer tyre, drive tyre and trailer tyre may all need different pressures, even within the same fleet.

Steer tyres need dependable load capacity and stable handling. Drive tyres must carry their share while delivering traction and standing up to torque. Trailer tyres can be exposed to scrub and lateral stress during turning, especially on multi-axle combinations. Each position has a job, which is why moving a tyre from one axle to another without checking its specification can create problems.

Dual tyres need extra attention. Both tyres in a pair should be closely matched in size, tread depth and pressure. A significant pressure difference means the better-inflated tyre can take more of the load. That overloads one tyre while the underinflated mate runs hot – a costly combination that can damage both casings.

Common mistakes that lead to tyre failures

The first mistake is relying on a tyre’s appearance. A heavy-duty tread pattern does not automatically mean the tyre has the load rating your truck needs. The second is setting pressures by habit. What worked on an empty run may be wrong for a fully loaded run, and what suits one axle may not suit another.

Another common issue is fitting a used tyre without confirming its specification, condition and history. Used truck tyres can offer value when they are correctly selected and thoroughly inspected, but they must still meet the required load capacity and be suitable for the position they will fill. Visible tread alone is not enough.

Finally, do not ignore uneven wear, persistent pressure loss, bulges, vibration or one tyre in a dual pair running noticeably hotter than the other. These are warning signs. Continuing to run can turn a manageable repair or replacement into a blowout, wheel damage, lost freight time and a much bigger bill.

A practical tyre plan for fleets and owner-drivers

The best tyre plan is simple enough to follow when the day gets busy. Keep a record of each vehicle’s approved tyre sizes, axle weights, target cold pressures and tyre positions. Check pressures regularly, inspect tyres before long trips and record recurring wear patterns. That information helps identify alignment issues, overload risk, suspension faults or unsuitable tyre choices before they take a vehicle off the road.

For fleets with mixed work, it can make sense to standardise tyre specifications where practical. It makes stock control easier and helps drivers know what is fitted. But standardisation should never override the needs of a particular vehicle or axle. A long-haul prime mover, a quarry tipper and a local delivery truck may all need a different answer.
